Consumption of ultra-processed foods has been linked to a number of chronic diseases, including cancer, depression, obesity and heart disease.Now it has been revealed that consuming these foods can also make you suffer from insomnia.

This was revealed in a study conducted in America.

 A Columbia University study found a link between ultra-processed foods and chronic insomnia.

It should be noted that ultra-processed foods are processed multiple times during preparation and are high in salt, sugar and otherartificial ingredients, while low in healthy nutrients such as fiber.

 Ultra-processed foods include bread, fast foods, sweets, coffees, cakes, snacks, breakfast cereals, chicken and fish nuggets, instant noodles, sugary drinks and sodas.

 Data from 39,000 people were examined for this study.

 The data was collected between 2013 and 2015 and collected details about people's dietary habits and insomnia symptoms.

Those in the study got 16 percent of their dietary needs from ultra-processed foods, and 20 percent reported chronic insomnia.

 Research has found that people who consume high amounts of ultra-processed foods are also more likely to have chronic insomnia.

As more and more foods are being processed in the current era, while sleep problems are also on the rise, it is important to look at how our diet has positive or negative effects on sleep, the researchers said.

 He said the research was somewhat limited because its findings were based on self-reported data, but it was the first of its kind to highlight another major disadvantage of ultra-processed foods.

He said that research indicates that women who consume ultra-processed foods are at a slightly higher risk of suffering from insomnia.

 It should be noted that lack of sleep is associated with several chronic diseases.

 Lack of sleep, insomnia and other problems increase the risk of heart diseases, obesity and others.

 The results of this study were published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

This is not the first study to discuss the link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and serious diseases.

 Earlier in May 2024, a 34-year Harvard University study found that high consumption of sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods increased the risk of premature death.

 The study found that high consumption of processed meat increased the risk of premature death by 13%.


Similarly, frequent consumption of sugary or artificially sweetened beverages increases the risk of premature death by 9%.

 High consumption of other ultra-processed foods increases this risk to 4 percent.
