Scientists first discovered Clade 9 in the country while conducting a study of monkeypox.
Clade
9, a new varicella variant, was detected in India. The National Institute of
Virology (NIV) has discovered a new variant causing the varicella-zoster virus
(VZV). Scientists first discovered Clade 9 in the country while conducting a
study of monkeypox. The research was published Sept. 6 in a recent issue of the
journal Annals of Medicine. While the study focused on the genomic
characterization of VZV, the researchers found the virus in suspected mpox
cases in children and adults.

Clade
9 was the most common strain in circulation in Germany, Great Britain and the USA.
The World Health Organization (WHO) claims that VZV is responsible for the highly
contagious varicella. The Global Health Organization stated that VZV is a
member of the herpesvirus family. Transmission of this virus is said to occur
through droplets, aerosols, or direct contact with respiratory secretions.

The
WHO says the virus causes mild disorders in children and tends to be more
severe in adults. Chickenpox, also known as chicken pox, is "characterized
by an itchy rash, usually beginning on the scalp and face and initially
accompanied by fever and malaise."
The
study revealed that while Clade 1 and Clade 5 were previously found in India,
Clade 9 was detected for the first time.
Symptoms
A
rash, fever, headache, loss of appetite, fatigue, and a general feeling of ill
health are common symptoms of Clade 9. Chickenpox rashes appear only two to
three weeks after exposure to the virus. Before the rash appears, an infected
person may experience fever, body aches and headaches.

Prevention
Experts
have yet to find any severity of infection between Clade 9 and its previous
variants.
Dr.
Vineeta Taneja, director of internal medicine at Fortis Hospital, told
Hindustan Times that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent
chickenpox. In addition, we must observe hygiene and regular hand washing.
